  • I have not lived in the area for many decades, but my earliest memories of attending Mass were at the Church of the Assumption and going to catechism class immediately after Mass, where a wonderful order of Sisters taught us our prayers and The Ten Commandments. They prepared us kids for our first Confession and not to be afraid of the dark inside the confessional because Jesus would be in there with us. I still have a photo of all us kids on the front steps of the church with the late Fr. Rudolph Wargo. Fr. Cornelius Gallagher succeeded him and my father told me that Father's main mission was visiting all the patients in the Barnesville Hospital. How kind of him. I remember our Confirmation, which was the first time I ever saw a Bishop. The late Bernie Miller of Bethesda was my sponsor. Bernie was also a gifted and talented singer and loved giving stellar performances most any Sunday, but especially for Christmas Midnight Mass, when my mother led the choir on the organ and played the chimes so beautifully. Fr. John Reardon succeeded Fr. Gallagher and he soon became concerned that the church had no fire insurance and bought a policy. One summer evening in the early 1960's a raging fire broke out in a feed mill directly across the street. We could see the smoke from Bethesda, when Dad took us all to the church. All of us had been taught to save the Blessed Sacrament and everything else we could from the fire. We even attempted to remove the pews but could not loosen the screws. I went to the choir loft to see if we could carry the organ out, but there was no way. The interior of the church became very hot and we all had to leave. The crowd of people outside yelled at the firemen to shoot more water on the roof because the asphalt shingles periodically ignited from the heat and the sparks. It was so sad because never did I believe that I would haver so much attachment to this wonderful Catholic church. The building was saved, but suffered serious damages, all totally covered by the firs insurance policy which Fr. Reardon had purchased. For about a year Mass was celebrated in the basement until the sanctuary was completely restored, damage to the beautiful stained glass windows repaired, fresh paint, new roof and Dad donated a new organ to replace the old, ruined pipe organ. I hope the Church of the Assumption continues serving all parishioner well until the end of time. Thanks to all the great clergy and wonderful parishioners here, I never vacillated in my faith for one second.

  • I was baptized here, 3/4 of my family goes to this church. My great uncle was the first person baptized here. My grandfather is now the eldest going Catholic at this church. Thank God we have father Dave now.
